What is Palladium

What is Palladium
Palladium is a metallic element in the second series of transition elements in the periodic system with symbol "Pd". Palladium was discovered by English chemist and physicist William Hyde Wollaston in 1803 who named it after the asteroid Pallas which in turn was named after the epithet of the Greek goddess Athena.

Next to platinum, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium and osmium, palladium is an element of so-called platinum group metals which have similar properties. As well as other elements of the platinum group metals palladium is characterized by outstanding catalytic properties, resistance to tarnish and wear, to chemical attack and to high temperatures, and by stable electrical properties. However, palladium is the least dense and has the lowest melting point of all platinum group metals.

Palladium is silvery-white metal resembling platinum and is heavier than silver but lighter than platinum. When annealed palladium is very ductile and malleable what makes it also very popular in jewelry especially when making white gold. However, for its other properties palladium is also very desired in industry especially in automotive industry for making catalytic converters. Besides automotive industry palladium is also used in electronics, dentistry, medicine, etc., while its outstanding hydrogen absorption properties make palladium also perfect for hydrogen purification.

The majority of palladium is produced by Russia - about half of world's production, while other larger producers of palladium are also South Africa with about 35%, and Canada and United States with about 11% of world's production. Palladium is very rear precious metal which is found alloyed with other metals such as gold and other platinum group metals, while majority of palladium is produced from nickel-cooper deposits.
